Today the Liberal Nationals will seek to amend the Health and Child Wellbeing Legislation Amendment Bill to close an alarming loophole which allows nearly 70,000 Victorian children to be exempt from the No Jab No Play Laws.
Jill Hennessy promised that “every Victorian pre-schooler will need up to date immunisations under tough No Jab No Play laws” and other than medical exemptions “no other excuses will be allowed”. The legislation, however, has an exemption for children who hold or whose parents hold a health care card, pension concession card or Veterans Affairs Card.
This fundamental flaw in the Legislation puts the health, safety and wellbeing of Victorian children at risk.
If Daniel Andrews is serious about immunisation he will support this amendment, failure to do so plays into the hands of anti-vaccination campaigners.
It’s imperative that all Members of Parliament, regardless of their political beliefs, support the Liberal Nationals amendment and have No Jab No Play laws strengthen to the level the Victorian community expects.
There are approximately 13,000 children in kindergartens and early childhood services today who are not fully vaccinated. Victoria is the only jurisdiction with ‘No Jab’ laws who allow an exemption for the Concession Care Card holders.
