24 hour medical centre, 7 days a week for Phillip Island

Monday, November 05, 2018

There is nothing more distressing than having a medical emergency and knowing the nearest medical care is at least a 40 minute drive away with no traffic.

That’s why the Liberal Nationals will fund a 24 hour medical centre for Phillip Island.

The $1.8 million two-year trial will see the opening hours of the current medical centre extended to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, manned by appropriately qualified medical, nursing and support staff.

The overnight staff will be able to diagnose and treat minor cases and have tele medicine access to Wonthaggi Hospital and other larger centres.

The Liberal Nationals will work with Bass Coast Health (BCH) and the owners of the medical centre to deliver 24 hour coverage to Phillip Island. We will work closely with BCH and the medical centre to ensure the best outcome for the Phillip Island community. That is our commitment.

Labor has neglected to provide adequate health services for the Island providing nothing but empty promises that are years away from fruition.

24/7 medical coverage on Phillip Island is an issue right now, which only the Liberals will fix.

In addition to 24/7 medical coverage on Phillip Island, we will fund additional coverage during peak periods and major events and we will continue to work with BCH to ensure the health hub provides an expanded range of services that the Island needs, including chemotherapy and dialysis.

This is a real and practical solution developed with proper consultation that can be implemented in 2019, not a campaign promise with no detail and delivered on the never.

Daniel Andrews has lost control of our population growth and has no plan to deal with it, which means our essential services like hospitals are bursting at the seams or in the case of Phillip Island, virtually non-existent.

The Liberal Nationals will work to decentralise our population which includes taking pressure off our larger regional hospitals like Wonthaggi and giving the community back control over their local health and medical access.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Health, Mary Wooldridge:

“The Liberals will invest in health services on the Island to ensure residents and visitors have access to round the clock health services.

Labor’s neglect has meant there is now a desperate need for 24 hour access to medical and health services on Phillip Island.”

Comments attributable to Member for Bass, Brian Paynter:

“I’ve been working with the Bass Coast Health and the Phillip Island community since being elected in 2014. This is a solution that will work.

Labor has delivered nothing but empty promises, only the Liberals will provide 24 hour medical access on Phillip Island.”
