Crime soaring in Nillumbik and Banyule

Thursday, March 23, 2017

Parliamentary Speech

I rise to ask the Minister for Police what specific measures and/or resources will be directed to the Nillumbik police to help combat an alarming change in crime under the Andrews Government.

The latest crime statistics show crime in Nillumbik has soared by nearly 48 percent in the last two years – one of the highest local government area increases.

In neighbouring Banyule crime figures under the Andrews Government have risen by more than 14 percent.

These figures are unsettling to local residents who are becoming increasingly concerned about law and order issues.  These statistics, which record disturbing rises in robberies and the cultivation or manufacture of drugs in Nillumbik, will do little to ease their anxieties.

Across Victoria crime has risen 20 percent under this Government with serious offences such as assaults, robberies, theft and breaking and entering all recording double digit increases in the last year.  It is unacceptable and I call on the Minister to act to reassure residents they are safe in their own homes.
