In November 2014 Daniel Andrews’ promised Victorians that his government would deliver a new stand-alone 195 bed Heart Hospital, with the State contributing $150 million of the $300 - $350 million cost.
Now in 2017 this flailing government has failed to secure the necessary funding partners and instead will need taxpayers to foot the bill for Daniel Andrews' black hole.
Labor abandoned the Liberal Nationals plans for a $120 million dedicated heart hospital co-located at Monash Medical Centre, in favour of an expensive stand-alone model requiring significant duplication of services.
Daniel Andrews promised 195 beds for $300-$350 million, but in reality it will cost over $500 million. Even an inferior, low cost 195 ‘points of care’ hospital will cost around $450 million.
In an act of absolute hypocrisy, 75 of the beds in the Heart Hospital are likely to be private, while Daniel Andrews axed 42 Private beds at the new Peter Mac, with the 13th floor, where they would have been located, remaining empty.
Daniel Andrews also promised his heart hospital would be built by 2018, but he won’t even have turned the first sod.
Daniel Andrews’ promises are clearly not worth the paper they are written on.
Quotes attributable to the Shadow Minister for Health Mary Wooldridge:
“Daniel Andrews’ failure to attract funding partners clearly highlights the flawed approach of his stand-alone Heart Hospital."
“This go at it alone attitude is all about Daniel Andrews putting politics ahead of patients.”
